Tips for smothie preparation
Blender
You can use any blender to make smoothies, however it is recommended to use the most powerful blender you can find, 1000 watts or more.
If you have a regular blender, you will have to chop your ingredients into smaller pieces and blend for longer periods of time. Peels and seeds will not blend completely and might destroy your regular blender.
Blending Time
Blending time will depend on the ingredients you are using. Blend smoothie for thirty seconds or less. However, when blend hardy ingredients such as pomegranate seeds or celery, blend them for up to a minute.
Fruits
Always peel fruit that is not organically grown.
If you don’t like the frothy appearance of your smoothie, add a cube or two of ice.
Vegetables
Vegetables such as carrots, beets, broccoli, zucchini, daikon radish, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, eggplant, pumpkin, squash, okra, peas, corn, green beans, and others do not combine well with fruit due to their high starch content.
Greens
Always rotate the green leaves that you add to your smoothies. Greens naturally have a small amount of oxalates and alkaloids that can be toxic if eaten every day for long periods of time.
You can blend greens whole. If you don’t like a peppery taste, remove the stalks from kale, collards, and chard.
If you want to add more sweetness to your green smoothie, add more fruit, honey, agave nectar, or medjool dates.
Nuts, Seeds, and Grains
Soak the nuts, seeds, and grains in order to soften. This is helpful for all blenders.
To soak fast way: place the nuts, seeds, or grains in a bowl, cover with boiling water and let soak for 10 minutes.
Processing
All fruits should be ripe.
Fruits like banana, pineapple, melons, and papaya are to be peeled.
Fruits like cherries, cantaloupes, honeydew melons, and papayas should have seeds removed.
Remove the stone from peaches, apricots, and mangoes.
Citrus should have most of its seeds removed, as otherwise the smoothie will be quite bitter.
Greens should be as fresh as possible, well cleaned, and stalks removed.
Sweeteners
Use raw natural sweeteners like bananas, mango, apples, pears or pitted date.
Consumption
Drink your smoothie by itself, and not as a part of a meal. You can eat anything you want approximately one hour before or after your smoothie.
Freezing
Freezing your fruits can make your smoothie thicker and colder. You can also pick up frozen fruit in your food store. |
